A compass that keeps pointing the way even when you're stopped.

Smart fusion between the device's GPS and the physical magnetometer. When you're riding, it uses GPS for accuracy. When you stop, it switches to the magnetometer so the compass doesn't freeze. One reliable reading, without you having to think about which source it's using.

How it works

Two sources, one reliable reading.

The app automatically detects if you're moving and chooses the right source. You just see the heading, without thinking about sensors.
1

The app detects your state

Measures your GPS speed in real time. If you're moving, it uses GPS as the main source (it's more stable at speed). If you're stopped, it switches to the magnetometer.

2

Fuses the sources

During transitions (starting, braking), the two readings combine with adaptive weighting. No sudden jumps — the heading shifts smoothly.

3

You see a reliable heading

The needle moves smoothly. It doesn't freeze when you brake. It doesn't wobble when you exit an intersection. It's the best reading from both worlds, presented as one.

What's included

More than a compass — an orientation system.

Fullscreen compass mode

Giant dial for when the compass is the only thing you need to see. Useful when stopped at an intersection deciding your heading, or when you stash your phone and just want a quick glance.

When to use it

The exact moment when a regular compass fails you.

Orienting the group

Stop to rest, everyone regrouped. The leader checks the compass to confirm the heading before moving on. With the fusion, that reading is reliable.

Frequently asked questions

Technical doubts about the fusion.

What is the magnetometer?
It's a physical sensor inside your phone that measures the Earth's magnetic field — the same principle as an analog compass. All modern smartphones have it built-in. TriakaMap uses it to know which way your device is pointing when you're still.
Do I need to calibrate it manually?
Most of the time, no. The app detects when the magnetometer reading becomes inconsistent and asks you to calibrate — usually by moving the phone in an "8" for a few seconds. It's the same thing any digital compass asks, but in TriakaMap only when necessary.
Does my vehicle interfere with the compass?
Yes, a traditional compass would suffer interference inside any vehicle (metal chassis, electronics). That's why TriakaMap uses fusion: in motion it relies on GPS, where the chassis doesn't affect it. Only when you stop and get out of the vehicle does the magnetometer come into play. Interference stops being a problem.
How do I activate it?
It's active by default — you don't have to do anything. The compass visible on the map already uses fusion. If you want to see it full size, there's a shortcut to fullscreen compass mode from the map menu.
How accurate is it?
In motion (GPS): degrees of accuracy, enough for off-road navigation. Stopped (calibrated magnetometer): depends on the quality of the phone's sensor and the magnetic environment, but typically stays within 5-10 degrees. The app lets you know if the reading quality is low so you know when to doubt.
Does it work offline?
Yes. Neither GPS nor the magnetometer need mobile data. Magnetic declination is calculated locally with your GPS position. The compass works the same with or without a signal.
